The Ashfords

The bookmaker and the woman who hears the room breathe

Charles Ashford takes wagers with a polished smile and pays just as politely. Violet Ashford is the singer who makes a room feel intimate even when it holds a hundred people. Between them, they know that the quickest route to truth is often through a rumour.

How you knew Cornelius

Cornelius accepted that the Ashfords were not discreet people. He once told Charles, "A secret under pressure tells you more than a secret in a locked drawer." He did not approve of Charles's methods, but he understood their usefulness.

Your circle

The club circle: the Sinclairs, the DuPonts, the Morettis. The wagering world connects Charles to the Vales and to Montclair.

Charles Ashford

Polished bookmaker with interests in both dog and horse racing

A polished bookmaker with interests in dog racing, horse racing, and prizefighting. Charles keeps his ear to every serious wager in the city and has always preferred a debt discussed in public. He knows who is short of cash, who suddenly has too much, and who gets defensive when money comes up.

In character

Loud, friendly, and relentless. Talks odds about everything ("I'd give you three to one she's lying"). Brings up other people's debts as if doing them a favour. Slaps backs, pours drinks, and never lets an awkward subject drop once it is on the table.

Played by Jenny

Violet Ashford

Dazzling Jazz Age chanteuse and dancer

A dazzling Jazz Age chanteuse and dancer. Violet hears the stories that follow wagers into clubs, dressing rooms, and private tables, and she knows when a silence in a room changes key. She decides when Charles's noise becomes leverage and when it becomes cruelty.

In character

Playful and sharp, with a singer's timing: she waits for the beat and lands the line. Teases Charles in public and steers him in private. Hums when she is thinking. Asks the question everyone is avoiding, but asks it sweetly.
